Welcome to my blog!
Life has a way of bringing us full circle, doesn’t it?
Born to Ivorian parents, I spent part of my childhood in Côte d’Ivoire before moving to the UK at the age of 10. Fast forward to 31 years old, I found myself packing up my life in the UK to return to the country that shaped my earliest memories.
Before our move, I experienced a whirlwind of emotions. Excitement and hope filled me as I envisioned the possibilities of starting fresh in Côte d’Ivoire, reconnecting with my roots, and creating a new chapter for my family.
This move was more than just a physical relocation- it was a journey of rediscovery, personal growth, and embracing a new chapter as both an expat and a returnee.
This blog is my space to document that journey, share insights, and connect with others navigating life abroad or considering a move to Africa. It’s not just about my story- it’s about helping you find yours.
Finding my Place in Two Worlds
Growing up in the UK, I always felt a pull towards my roots. Ivorian culture remained a part of my life, but living abroad created a unique blend of perspectives. Returning to Côte d’Ivoire has been a chance to reconnect with the land, traditions, and people I hold dear.
But this transition hasn’t been without its challenges. the experience has been eye-opening so far.
Our first week after arriving, was a real learning curve. I often felt lost as we navigated the basics of settling in, and familiarising ourselves with the system, from figuring out where to find a local sim, subscribe to calls and data plans to experimenting with the various means of transportation to suit our needs. Another hurdle to overcome was getting used to paying mostly cash or via Mobile money, where card payment facilities aren’t as widely used.
Through this blog, I want to share the lessons I’ve learned to make it easier for others who are embarking on a similar journey.
Why This Blog Exists
The idea for this blog came from a deep desire to share my experiences and provide a roadmap for others. Whether you’re an expat, a member of the African diaspora, or simply curious about life in Africa, or specifically Côte d’Ivoire, my goal is to offer:
- Practical advice: Tips on settling in, from finding housing to understanding the health system.
- Personal stories: Honest reflections on the highs and lows of life abroad.
- Guides and Resources: Everything from organizing finances to choosing the best schools for kids
I remember my struggles trying to open a bank account as a stay-at-home mum without a traditional occupation, with one of the popular banks and facing endless paperwork and questions about my employment status. It felt as though my role at home wasn’t fully recognized. I am sure this will particularly resonate with students and retirees alike who may have also faced such challenges. I felt defeated and unsure how to manage my finances in a new country, if only I had a guide to point me to more flexible options.
As a homemaker, I also want to highlight the realities of balancing parenting with building a life in a new environment. This blog is as much about navigating motherhood as it is about exploring life abroad.
